Bad Day

Posted on January 12, 2012

I’m guilty of not posting on tumblr when life is going well. I think sometimes I know my google juice is just good enough that it’s not too hard to find my tumblr. Most of the times my photo updates are a litmus paper as to how happy I am and how well life is going even without words. I definitely post how I feel and as I feel it but the periods of empty posts are filled with most of my life is pretty damn special / amazing moments. So it surprises me how often it seems so many of my tumblr friends have a bad day almost every day by reading their blogs. Life is hard and stuff but is it really that bad?

2011 Goals - Year End Review

Posted on January 11, 2012

Things I completed:

 1. Run a half-marathon - In March 19th, I ran my first half-marathon with the Trail Hawks with the Pi Day River Rotation. My goal was <3 hours and I came in at 2 hours 31 minutes.

 2. Focus on saving more money - I finally was able to start a real savings account and start socking money away.

 3. Take a writing class - I took my first Memoir Writing class on January 12.

 4. Take a photograph class - I told a friend of mine if she taught a class on advanced photography that I’d take it. So of course I did!

 5. Finish decorating my place. I bought furniture, a rug, chairs, and even hung photos and art on my walls.

 6. Take a big trip / travel more - I’m not counting Austin but I took a three week trip in September to Seattle, Portland, and LA then another return trip to LA in October.

 7. Agree to do a photography show - This was a big growing up process for me. I hate showing work and I’m very self-conscience about what I show. I ended up showing for three shows and some of my pieces even hung at the Lawrence Arts Center (LAC). All-in-all, I sold five photos including everything I showed at the LAC which I’ll brush off as a success. That said, I don’t foresee doing any more shows.

Where I missed the mark:

 1. Read for enjoyment - I cheated and listened to three or four audiobooks so I can’t quite claim success.

 2. Eat at home more - I did well for a while but then I reverted back after starting my job this past summer.

 3. Reduce my overall clutter and possessions - I did pretty good at throwing something out every time I bought something new. I somehow missed the mark though as the year progressed because I intended to dump my storage unit and to throw more crap out of my house.

 4. Work on at least three to four photography projects - I worked on one and never published it. One of my only regrets of the year.

Unexpected:

 1. Changed jobs.

 2. Discovered I’m ready for a real relationship again.

 3. My heart was a little more guarded and a little broken still I discovered.

This year I decided to celebrate New Years Eve in Tulsa, OK with some fellow Trail Hawks and friends: Chris, Nicole, and Lauren. We entered a midnight 5k and a 2 mile polar plunge on New Years day. Our hotel was 1.5 miles from both events so we ran for an extra 3 miles on NYE.

Not only was the event a lot of fun but overall we did quite well in the Polar Plunge. Lauren took first place in the women’s category and Nicole took 2nd place in overall women’s and first place in her age division. Somehow, I came out in 7th place in my age division and 68th overall which I’m quite happy with considering I never speed run or jump in pools of freezing cold water.

This photo is of Chris and I after completing our run and being soaked in quite literally freezing cold water.

365

Posted on December 19, 2011

I decided to buy myself a Christmas present this year using my bonus so I picked up a Panasonic Lumix GF3 tonight along with a 45-200mm zoom lens which should be in from Amazon on Tuesday. I’ve been wanting a smaller and easier to carry camera along with the power of a DSLR for quite some time. I’m also feeling the need to work on another 365 project this year and I think this camera will do the job nicely.

Man Burning by Josh Ritter

Posted on December 13, 2011

Listen on Spotify

Don’t stand so close to me
Don’t be another tragedy
I’ve burned everybody who had a hand to lend

A man burning at both ends
No one put me in this hell
I lit a fire underneath myself
Now I’m blazing the same old trail back to you again

A man burning at both ends
A dangerous thing to know about
No painless way to put me out
You either make a bed that’s cold
Or you’re walking barefoot over coals
I regret the things I’ve done
Bitter words and fiery tongues
And letters burned to smoke and then turned to wind

A man burning at both ends
A dangerous thing to know about
No painless way to put me out
You either make a bed that’s cold
Or you’re walking barefoot over coals
We ran barefoot through the reeds
Wetted down and with the need
The tide though high and getting higher
Could not put out the man on fire

Look look look look look down your street for me
Look look look look look up your the window please
You’ll see a light where before no light had been
A man burning at both ends

All or None by Pearl Jam (Vedder/Gossard)

Posted on December 9, 2011

Pearl Jam on my brain today apparently. I just really like the lyrics to this song and the overall realisation that exists in it. Listen on Spotify

It’s a hopeless… situation
And I’m starting to believe
That this hopeless… situation
Is what I’m trying to achieve

But I try
To run on
Towards
All or none,… all or none

Here’s the selfless confession
Leading me back to war
Can we help that,.. our destinations
Are the ones we’ve been before

I still try
To run on
Towards all
Or none,… all or none

To myself I… surrender
To the one I’ll never please

But I still try,.. to run on
I still try,.. to run on
But it’s
All or none,… all or none.
